“So what I did, I wrote about brother Allie’s baseball mitt.
It was a very descriptive subject. It really was…He’s dead now… you’d have
liked him.” (38)
Background: Allie is Holden's brother who died of leukemia. Holden chose a subject in which he could easily write about, a subject he knew lots about and could write in detail. Allie was very important to Holden so when he passed away it impacted Holden's life dramatically. Symbolism: Allie's mitt is kind of what he has left to remember Allie. He treasures the mitt because it belonged to his brother he loved so much. Motif: Allie's mitt has memories to Holden and when he thinks of Allie he thinks of his mitt which he wrote his poems on. Theme: It addresses how emotionally unstable Holden is especially being away from his family. Also how loosing someone you love isn't so easy to move on from. Life connection: As a teenager it's hard to deal with death of loved one's like Holden so remembering him through material things is normal. Neyda Rodriguez p.1
