Background: Holden used to joke around with Jane when they played checkers together.
Symbolism: Jane put the kings in the back row as a way to block Holden out. Holden doesn't realize what she is doing or he is ignoring the thought that Jane doesn't want to let him in.
Motif: In Catcher In the Rye Holden brings up multiple times when he played checkers with Jane and he talks about her always lining her kings up in the back.

Theme: This quote addresses the fact that teens try to build to many walls and don't want to let people in. When they put up walls its like they are growing up to fast because they think they can deal with their problems by themselves instead of asking for help.
Life Connection: In life everyone builds walls, its normal to try and block people out to protect yourself. Sometimes its easy to get through to people and help them and other times its harder. People with bigger walls have bigger problems and need more help but wont let people help them.

Background: Holden is joking around with Jane because when they played checkers together she would never move all her kings in the back row.
Symbolism: She puts all her kings in the back row because it is a way of putting up a barrier between herself and Holden.
Motif: This is not a motif throughout the story.
Theme: This quote shows how children will try to protect themselves against something or someone.
Life Connection: In our lives we try to protect ourselves the best way we can against things we don't like and we feel are not safe.

Background: Holden is describing how Jane plays checkers

Symbolism: When Jane plays checkers she always keeps her kings in the back row; suggesting that she keeps an emotional wall up.

Motif: This fact about Jane is a motif because it repeats throughout the novel.

Theme: This quote expresses the theme of mental health and it leads the reader to believe that something major happened in Jane's past.

Life Connection: In life, when people go through traumatizing situations, it often leads them to being mentally unstable.
