“You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park
South? That little lake? By any chance do you happen to know where they go, the
ducks, when it gets all frozen over?” (60)
Elizabeth D. Per. 5 Background: Holden is curious where ducks from New York are supposed to go during the winter. Symbolism: The ducks represent himself. When he questions where the ducks go when the lake is frozen over he is referring to himself being frozen over, which is interpreted as him being "screwed." He wants to know where he should go and what he is going to do with his life. Motif: The ducks represent him and he repeatedly asks where the "ducks" are supposed to go. Theme: The quote addresses the theme of human beings wanting to know what they are going to do in life, how they are going to get there, and where they are going to be. Life Connection: In life, plenty of us find ourselves in situations where we do not know what we are going to do with our lives, so we constantly wonder where we are going to end up, like Holden is.
